RANGE REPORT - 9X18 Makarov

Not many brands of Makarov ammo are available in Pakistan. In fact, I could only find three, the common Russian, the Barnaul Russian and the Federal American Eagle. There are many lots available in Russian ammo but I have considered all of them as one type of ammo.

Test Parameters
Handgun:.............................. Makarov PM (1989)
Distance:...............................20 M
Technique:.............................Deliberate fire with both hands, shooting while sitting on a chair with elbows resting on a table and support under the hands.
Aiming point...........................Center Mass

Test Results
Please note that the size of the group is more important than the points scored. If the group is tight but away from the bull, it can be adjusted by zeroing the gun. If the group is all over the place, nothing can be done, even if it scores comparatively more points. Following scoring system would therefore be used to quantify these range tests.

Scoring System......................
- Target Points..................... as scored on the target.
- Group Size........................ 50/50 points for 1.0 inch or smaller group. One point will be deducted on each 0.1 inches increase in size of group.

Following ammos were fired ...........
1. Russian 94 grains FMJ
2. Barnaul 94 grain FMJ
3. Federal American Eagle 95 grain FMJ

Russian 94 grains FMJ
Manufacturer............... Various state owned ammo factories, Russia
Price........................ Rs 70-80 per bullet
Stoppages............... None
Group
- String 1...............1.2 inches (48/50)
- String 2...............6.2 inches / 3 inches, average 4.6 inches (18/50)
- Total...................64/100

Score
- String 1...............48/50
- String 2...............45/50)
- Total...................93/100

Totat Score...............154/200

Availability…………….. Used to be most common and quite cheap, but no very easily available nowadays and off course, is the most expensive.

- VERY ACCURATE Ammo.
- Though the group size may seem large but two bullets going away is clearly shooter's fault. Remaining eight bullets, as you can see, are in less than 2 inch area which is pretty accurate.
- This ammo has the lowest recoil of all three ammos which makes the second shot quick and accurate.
- This is the traditional Russian ammo that comes in a pack of 16 bullets in the most ordinary packing that one can imagine. The head stamp has similar type markings, giving the manufacturing year and a number showing the code of the company where it was manufactured. As you can see, different lots have been shown in the pic.
- One of the lots had slightly smaller size bullets (bullet on the right with 10 01 head stamp). Unfortunately, I have all these bullets and only one is left that has been shown in the pic below. This lot of ammo had the lowest recoil and was very very accurate.

Image

Barnaul 94 grain FMJ
Manufacturer............... Barnaul Cartridge Plant, Russia
Price........................ Rs 50-60 per bullet
Stoppages............... None
Group
- String 1...............1.6 inches (44/50)
- String 2...............3.5 inches (25/50)
- Total...................69/100

Score
- String 1...............46/50
- String 2...............50/50)
- Total...................96/100

Totat Score...............165/200

Availability……………... Fresh arrival. Available from prominent dealers in big cities.

- VERY ACCURATE AMMO.
- Recoil is higher than the ordinary Russian ammo but lower than the Federal ammo.
- A very good choice, if the availability remains stable.

Federal American Eagle grain High Velocity
Manufacturer............... Federal Cartridge Company, USA
Price........................ Rs 50-70 per bullet
Stoppages............... none
Group
- String 1...............2.2 inches (38/50)
- String 2...............1.8 inches (42/50)
- Total...................80/100

Score
- String 1...............49/50
- String 2...............48/50)
- Total...................97/100

Totat Score...............177/200

Availability…………….. Available with big dealers only.

Comments
- VERY ACCURATE Ammo.
- This ammo performed the best in the tests.
- It however has the strongest recoil of all three which makes the second shot comparatively difficult.

All ammos tested were found accurate. From price point of view, Barnaul and Federal are a good buy.

BTW, any one having idea of the big and small bullet in Russian ammo?? Any expert??

Laiken sir, the ""Shooter Error"" in first two tests is distorting the results. Second string in borth first two cases are bad due to shooter error. Otherwise results would be very close. Dont you think?

Yes Alvi sahib, you are right. As I said in my conclusion, all three are very accurate ammos. The difference lies in recoil which is least in old Russian ammo and max in Federal. With Russian ammo, second shot is very quick and deadly. That makes a lot of difference in SD situations.
Afterall, old Russian ammo is the one which was originally designed for this wonderful weapon. :)

The ammunition with the "10" code is from Bulgaria. It looks like you also had some Chinese "71" cartridges.

Interesting. I always thought it was all Russian ammo.

Could you provide us some information about identifying various brands of old Makarov ammo??

Thanks and regards :)

OK, here is a short, quick attempt to help with 9mm Makarov ammunition identification. I will include a pic of some of the headstamp variations in my collection, as well as some common shooting ammo. I am envious of your Russian "17" code as I have not had the opportunity to get one of those...yet.

There are many loading variations of the 9mm Makarov cartridge, from at least 14 countries, and seen with brass, aluminum, copper-washed steel, brass-washed steel, laquered steel, and "silver" steel cases.

Image

Here they are identified (left to right, top to bottom):
Speer-US, Starline-US, East Germany, China, China, China
Yugoslavia, Yugo., Yugo., Russia, Russia, USSR,
Russia, USSR, Russia, Peru, Poland, Poland,
Bulgaria, Hungary, Hungary, Hungary, Hungary, Uzbekistan,
France, Italy, Czech, Czech, Czech, Slovakia.
Image
And a few more from Russia, Russia, Russia, Russia, US.

I hope this is helpful. Please post any comments or questions.

Wonderful effort JonnyC. Bravo!

About your '17' code remark. Is there any possibility of getting an empty case/shell of this round to your place ?

I don't know why, but I somehow thought I saw a "17" headstamp on one round, but I must have been mistaken. Thanks to Makarov expert John Moss for questioning me on that.

What a wonderful explanation. Thanks jonnyc, I would have probably never known that so many countries / companies (specially those from US) have been manufacturing Mak ammo.

Regarding 17 casing, I wish I could send the bullets to you, somehow. I would love them to become a part of your collection :)

thanks for the effort brother :)

4. 38 82
5. 38 83

Very interesting. I think the earliest documented Makarov headstamp is 711 * 49 *, and there is a rumor of a 1947 example. Can you post a pic of the "50" that you have?

@ KBW/MR/Shariq,

I've received an email from brother JonnyC and will be forwarding it to your regarding some desired/required head stamps, if available to us.

Sorry brother, it got late. This was some old ammo that I fired many years back. There was still one case lying with me which I quoted that day. Now when I wanted to take the pics, I realised I had lost it. Took me few days in searching it in the junk. However, here are the pics.

Image
The lower figure is clearly visible which is 50. The upper figure is not clearly readable. may be 76 but I cant be sure.

Image
side view of the case.

It is berdan primed, as all Russian Makarov ammo. Hope it is of some help. :)

Could it possibly be a "38"? And a bit to the top-left, it almost looks like an "89" in Arabic. Is that possible?

Well, examined it with magnifying glass today. I am not sure because the surface in that area has been scrubbed and so are the figures written under it. The right portion looks more like 8 but the left portion does not give an indication of 3. :confusion-questionmarks:

Ah...the "science" of cartridge study and collection can be very frustrating!
My good friend, who is writing and will soon publish THE book on 9mm Makarov pistols and cartridges has asked me more about this case. I will PM you some of the technical questions.

@jonnyc
here are few more pics in day light. I have tried to take pics from different light angles. Though not very clear, the upper figure looks like 75 or 78 to me. What do you say??

Thank you. I will pass these on to a Makarov "expert" and see what he has to say.
