REVIEW SUMMARY

The Ruger Super RedHawk Alaskan .44 Magnum Revolver (RRA44) is built like a stone-brick house and will last you several lifetimes. It packs a solid punch, is relatively compact and reasonably light for the power it packs. It is an excellent companion while one is out in the woods or hiking up in the mountains. The RRA44 is well-capable and compact enough to serve as a good carry weapon for self defense purpose against both four legged and two legged predators. It is capable of very good accuracy but is for those who can handle the .44 mag recoil.

DETAILED REVIEW

Despite the fact that it has a 2 1/2 inch barrel, it looked and felt huge in my hand. But when I wrapped my fingers around its grip and took the trigger, I knew this was IT. The grip feels just perfect. Perfect size, perfect feel, perfect shape, perfect everything. This gun is big and heavy in a manly way. Everything about it said "Unbreakable".

It is built to last, last more than a very long time. You won't be able to wear it out even after firing a few thousand mag rounds. It's design is a solid frame, with no side plate, and the massive cylinder locks up in front at the crane and at the rear into the recoil plate of the heavy frame. The ejector rod does not rotate, and will never unscrew itself from its fixed position, locking up the cylinder. It's cylinder bolt notches are cut a bit off center, making a stronger cylinder wall. The barrel/cylinder gap measures approximately three one-thousandths of an inch (.003").

The sights are made of blued steel and are fully adjustable. The front ramp has a red insert and the rear notch has a white outline to help the sight picture in bad lighting conditions.

ImageImage

The super-strong Redhawk design locks the cylinder into the frame at front and rear. This triple-locking cylinder helps in positive alignment and dependable operation shot after shot.

ImageImageImage

Ruger's patented Transfer Bar Mechansim provides security against accidental discharge.

Image

The gun comes with Recoil Cushioning Hogue® Tamer™ Monogrip®. It has aninternal recoil cushion positioned under the web of the hand which helps reduce the impact of powerful loads, while peg-style grip frame easily accommodates custom grips. There are no screws holding the grip to the frame, and to remove the grip, a plastic wedge is provided to help in the removal. The grip felt perfect in my hand and the pebble finish helped to keep a good firm grasp on the weapon under recoil.

ImageImage

The one-piece Hogue grips are removed by use of a special wedge tool.
ImageImage

It has a strong extended frame with extra metal in top strap, sidewalls and barrel mounting areas to handle powerful
big game loads.

Recoil is a bit snappy. Afterall, it IS a 2 1/2 inch barrel .44 magnum revolver, what else were you expecting? I shot 60 rounds and during the last 20 rounds I could feel my hand was numb and my wrist aching, my elbow feeling the strain and me feeling the recoil right upto my shoulder. But then you are not expected to shoot this many rounds with it in one go in practical situations, are you?

For a 2.5 inch barrel revolver, it is very accurate. Target results from 50 feet:

It is certainly not a pocket gun. You will need a good holster to make the gun ride comfortably on your hip or under your shoulder.

I will conclude this review by stating here that this gun is really high quality. It is an over-built revolver that is not for recoil shy shooters or for shooters with weak arms and shoulders.

Yet another outstanding review of a gun very less know to many of us here in Pakistan. And I agree with you that the revolver is surprisingly accurate for a 2.5" barrel. And surely, it's not made for the light hearted.

Thanks a lot again for a wonderful review :text-bravo:

Excellent review brother, I really like the grip angle, and the size for a .44 mag is just wonderful, can prove to be an excellent weapon as a backup or even conceal carry.

@ Crete , beautiful review Bro. I loved it when you wrote about Taurus 9 mm and I loved this piece just as good. Very informative and to the point. Looking forward to more revolver reviews from you :text-goodpost:

Brilliant!

Bravo Crete. Another good review of a seemingly very rugged and reliable ( Ruger :) ) revolver.

It is really unfortunate that we don't get to see Ruger's forearms here in our neck of the woods. And when, on some rare occassions, one does get to see a piece or two, these are being offered at such absurd prices that one is forced to turn away.

I will encourage our US and Canadian members to come forward and share reviews of more products from Ruger.

Thanks for the effort Crete.

I just love it. I am surprised you were able to shoot 60 rounds from this beast in a single session.
Thanks a lot for such a wonderful review. Really enjoyed reading it.

Very nice handgun Crete. Envious!

I'd like to add a .44 mag wheel gun to my collection at some point. It'll probably have a 4-6 inch barrel though. :-)

Kind regards,
Mark

Very well reviewed

One question, if this is not a pocket pistol, then why should one not prefer a longer barreled .44mag?

I like the proportions of the 2 inch barrel, I'd buy a snubby just for that reason, it looks awesome, if I were allowed to shoot it.

4 inch barrel minimum legally for a handgun in NZ, otherwise you can only collect but not shoot it if its shorter than that.

I don't own any firearms that I can't also legally shoot.

Kind regards,
Mark

@ Mark
I think this gun will look as balanced with a 4" tube as well.
I worked on Ruger 101 and Security -6 model .357 and they looked very similar.

Same here, No wall hangers.
If I own it , or I hang it on the wall, It Shoots.
Sometimes, not so good, but they will fire.

Oh Man! Would I love to have one of these as my car carry and side carry gun while travelling.

Good review Crete. Thanks for sharing with everyone another good review.

No BG would like to be staring down the business end of this small canon. :)

Hey guys, its US$ 1,000 in US. Any idea what would be asking price in Pk, if available?

A well done review!
It is especially pertinent to me because I am trading my revolver to a best friend for the ALASKAN.
He shot mine and fell in love with it. I wanted the ALASKAN to begin with, but it wasn't available yet.
I had mine refinished per my custom instructions and it came out perfect. Alternating matte / polished black with the hammer and triggerguard left 'in-the-white'. If you block out the barrel, you can imagine how the ALASKAN would look in this finish scheme.
We're trading because he wants the extra barrel length and I do not. The deal includes a holster for each of us.
Take a look at the pictures. He offered to get my trade refinished just like the original, but I said to spend the extra money on the holster.
Both of us will be happy with the trade.

RUGERS. SuperRedhawk at top.

Right side. HOGUE Cocobolo grip.

Right side. HOUGE rubber grip.

I'm looking forward to getting the SHORTY version of the .44.

Here's a link to the company that makes the holster I'm getting for that ALASKAN, plus a picture of it.
It can be worn strongside, or crossdraw ( my preference ).
The Mernickle holster was really the only choice for me as it had all the features I was looking for in a a top-quality holster. Not cheap, but well worth the money. I called and spoke with one of the owner's daughters who helps run the business. Fine folks and family.
He's getting a Bianchi ( pronounced 'BEE-YANKEE', I called and asked!!! ) Cyclone 111 which can be worn both ways as described above.
Great trade for both of us, and we can shoot both at the range for fun. It's not like I'll never see my old gun again!

That is without a doubt the best part of trading your guns with your range buddies. You get to enjoy banging your Ex even after replacing her with something new. ;)

Another good thing about treadin with range buddies is that such deals are almost always clean and win-win type.

Excellent wheelguns and a very nice exchange deal. Unfortunately, we don't have much access here to these wonderful guns. :)

Wow. Normally short barreled pistols are not my thing, but for a 2.5" barrel that is incredibly accurate! If Canada would permit me to have a short barreled pistol like that I would be sold. Thanks for the review :)
