Based on academic sessions me, isk and a few other members had with Atiq Massan, I remember that steel with carbon content i.e., ranging between 0.05 to 0.29 are not considered as suitable for a functional sword as it is not hardened enough for effective used. Though, they might be used for decoration purposes. Steel with carbon content ranging between .5 and .7 are considered ideal for durability and sharpness.

I have a Gerber tanto 06 in S30V steel and it's composition is Carbon 1.45%, Chromium 14.00%, Vanadium 4.00%, Molybdenum 2.00%. ( link http://www.gerbergear.com/var/gerber/st ... ulljpg.jpg )

Well you are asking a simple question: explain parts and the design of a car.
Carbon gives, holds, bonds, saves, tensile release, temperate release, vibration and what not... Making steels in japan was the time when emperor wanted good weapons and started one place and then let them work at their will. Soon good things started coming and finally the process of folding. Now it depends what Carbon and when is it inserted in steel.

as far as the carbon quality steels are concerned... they had very bad ores so they tried what not.. and SUCEEDED in about 150 or so years to make space age steels with stone age methods. YEPPP thats true..
